The technology behind jet ski batteries

Jet skis are not only a symbol of fun and freedom on the water, they are also technically sophisticated water motorcycles in which the right battery technology plays a central role. In principle, jet ski batteries are specially adapted motorcycle batteries - starter batteries that reliably start the engine even in maritime use. It is particularly important that the jet ski battery is vibration-resistant, robust and leak-proof in order to withstand the extreme stresses at sea, in the river or even in the open sea. The right jet ski battery ensures vibration resistance, leak-proofness and a long service life - regardless of whether you prefer a GEL battery, AGM battery or VRLA GEL battery.

Battery technologies at a glance

Gel batteries (VRLA-GEL)

Gel batteries are based on classic lead-acid technology, in which the electrolyte is brought to a gel-like consistency by adding silica. This design ensures that the battery is leak-proof and waterproof - a decisive advantage in a maritime environment.

AGM batteries (VRLA-AGM)

AGM batteries use a glass fiber fleece to bind the electrolyte, which leads to a fast charging capacity and high starting performance. Although they are also designed to be leak-proof in principle, their leak resistance varies depending on the model.

Lithium batteries

Lithium batteries are technologically advanced and are characterized by their particularly low weight and high energy density. They are ideal for applications where every kilogram counts - for example in competition use.

However, the price is significantly higher compared to gel or AGM batteries, which is why they are mainly used for high performance requirements or in the professional sector. Nevertheless, a lithium battery can be an advantage for Sea-Doo jet skis or Yamaha jet skis, especially when weight and performance are important.

Flooded batteries 

Flooded batteries are the traditional solution, but are less suitable for use with jet skis.

Due to these limitations, wet batteries are usually not recommended for use in a jet ski, as they often cannot withstand the high demands in the maritime sector. Nevertheless, there are applications in which a 12V battery can be useful as a wet-cell battery - provided that high vibration resistance or leakage resistance is not required.
