Operating instructions

Instructions for use, warnings and safety instructions for motorcycle batteries

General notes

• Absolutely maintenance-free VRLA batteries (AGM + GEL) do not need to be topped up with water.
• These batteries must not be opened. Opening them can impair the function of the battery.
• Always observe all warnings and safety instructions.
• The temperature of the battery and battery acid should ideally be above 10 °C.
• The battery may only be installed in the vehicle in the position specified by the manufacturer.
• Ensure that the battery is sufficiently ventilated and follow the vehicle manufacturer‘s instructions.

Always charge the battery before installation

Batteries can lose charge during storage. We therefore recommend fully charging each battery before installation to ensure optimum performance.

Installing and removing the battery

If you are unsure about removing or installing the battery, please contact a qualified specialist workshop.

Removal:
• Switch off the engine and all electrical consumers.
• Expose the battery removal area.
• First disconnect the negative terminal (-), then the positive terminal (+).
Installation:
• Expose the installation area of the battery.
• Avoid short circuits (e.g. using tools).
• First connect the positive terminal (+), then the negative terminal (-).
• Ensure that the terminal clamps are firmly and securely seated.
• Transfer any existing parts (e.g. terminal caps, brackets, hose connections or connection holders) from the old battery to the new one.

Storage and transport

• Always store batteries in a cool, dry and upright position.
• Protect from direct sunlight.
• Secure the positive terminal against short circuits (e.g. with a terminal cap or insulating tape).
• Always store filled batteries upright and secure against tipping over to prevent acid leakage.
• When transporting: Only transport batteries in an upright position and secure them against tipping over.
• Check the charge regularly and recharge if necessary (see chapter 6 „Charging the battery externally“).

Maintenance

• Keep battery surfaces clean and dry. Clean only with a damp or antistatic cloth.
• Protect poles and terminals from corrosion and treat with acid-free grease.
• If the starting power is insufficient, check the battery and recharge if necessary.
• In the event of seasonal decommissioning (e.g. during the winter break), check the voltage every 4 - 8 weeks.
• If the voltage falls below 12.3 V, recharging is necessary.
• Permanent maintenance or overcharging is not recommended and can damage the battery.
• Maintenance-free batteries do not require topping up under normal operating conditions.
• Under special conditions (e.g. high temperatures, frequent trickle charging or intensive charging/discharging), check the electrolyte level every 4 weeks.

Charging the battery externally

• Only use suitable chargers and observe the operating instructions for the charger.
• Do not charge frozen batteries or batteries with a temperature above 45 °C.
• Connect the positive terminal (+) of the battery to the positive terminal of the charger and the negative terminal (-) of the battery to the negative terminal of the charger.
• Only switch on/plug in the charger after connecting the battery.
• When charging is complete, first switch off the charger and then disconnect the connections.
• Interrupt the charging process immediately if the battery becomes hot or leaks acid.

Fire, flames and smoking are forbidden
• Avoid creating sparks when handling cables and electrical devices and when there are electrostatic discharges.
•  Avoid short circuits (e.g. by not placing any tools on the battery).

Risk of burns
• Battery acid is highly corrosive and can cause severe burns and eye damage.
• Always wear protective gloves/clothing and eye protection.
• Battery acid can be corrosive to metals.

Handing in an old battery
• Return an old battery to an authorised body.
- During transport, observe the instructions in Point 4.
- Never dispose of old batteries as domestic waste!

First aid:
• If acid fumes are inhaled: provide for fresh air. In case of irregular breathing or respiratory arrest, seek medical dvice immediately and administer first aid. In case of respiratory irritation: consult a physician.
• If acid splashes in the eye: remove contact lenses if possible. Immediately rinse with cleanwater for at least 15minutes. Then consult a physician.
• If acid splashes on the skin or in the hair: immediately remove any contaminated clothing. Rinse skin or hair with water or in the shower.
• If acid splashes on clothing: absorb spillage to prevent material damage. Immediately neutralise with soda or soapy water and rinse thoroughly with water.
• If acid is swallowed: immediately rinse mouth and drink plenty of water. Do NOT induce vomiting. If you feelunwell, call a POISON CENTRE or a physician.

Warning note
• Do not expose the battery to direct daylight, as this may cause damage to the battery housing.
• A discharged battery may freeze. Therefore, do not expose it to temperatures below zero.
