Operating instructions |
General information
• Always observe the warnings and safety instructions when working with a battery!
• Fill the battery using the acid container supplied.
Note:
A blocked ventilation opening can lead to damage to the battery and acid damage to the vehicle!
Ventilation using a ventilation tube:
The ventilation opening on the side of the battery is closed for transportation and storage when empty.
•
If the ventilation opening is closed with a sealing hose: Remove this hose (1. Exposing the ventilation opening) and replace the hose with a drain hose. If the vehicle is already equipped with a long drain hose: Connect it to the new battery. If the old ventilation hose is no longer in good condition, replace it with the hose supplied with the new battery. Do not kink or crush the ventilation hose!
•
If the ventilation opening is closed with a plug: Remove this plug with a suitable tool. Then fit an elbow -connector with the ventilation hose connected.
Ventilation via cell caps:
•
If the caps of the battery cells have ventilation openings, these may be sealed with adhesive tape or similar. These ventilation openings can be opened by removing the adhesive tape or simila..
Filled battery:
•
A battery filled with acid is ready for operation.
•
Check the battery voltage with a suitable measuring device. If the battery voltage is less than 12.4 V, the battery must be charged as explained in point 4.
Unfilled battery:
Fill the battery before installation. Ensure adequate ventilation when working on the battery in closed rooms.
•
Gently tilt the battery several times 15 minutes after filling. Repeat this after the charging process of approx. two hours (see point 3). If necessary, top up the cells with acid up to the “Max” mark.
• Wipe off any acid splashes immediately with a moistened antistatic cloth.
Batteries can lose charge during storage. We therefore recommend fully charging each battery before installation to ensure optimum performance.
•
The temperature of the battery and battery acid should preferably be above 10 °C.
•
Only install this battery in the vehicle in the position specified by the manufacturer. Always ensure that the battery is sufficiently ventilated. Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.
•
Add these instructions to the vehicle’s operating instructions.
3.1 Removing and installing the battery
If you are not sure about the correct procedure for removing/installing the battery, please contact a qualified workshop.
Removal:
•
Switch off the engine and all electrical consumers before installation.
•
Expose the battery removal area.
•
Always disconnect the negative terminal first and then the positive terminal.
Installation:
•
Expose the battery installation area.
•
Avoid short circuits, e.g. using tools.
•
Connect the positive terminal first and then the negative terminal. Ensure that the terminal clamps are firmly and securely seated.
•
Transfer other parts such as the terminal cap, retaining bracket, hose connections and connection holder (if present) from the old battery to the new one.
•
Always ensure that the battery is sufficiently ventilated! A blocked ventilation opening can lead to damage to the battery and acid damage to the vehicle! (See also point 1, Commissioning.) This also applies to the transportation of the old battery.
•
If the battery has a sensor cable, this must be connected in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. If a sensor cable is present but no connection is provided in the vehicle, strip the cable end with insulating or adhesive tape and then attach the cable to the battery housing with adhesive tape.
3.2 Storage and transportation
•
Only store batteries in cool, dry places.
•
Protect batteries from direct sunlight.
•
Protect the positive terminal from short circuits (put on the terminal cap or insulate with adhesive tape).
•
Only store filled batteries vertically and protect them from tipping over so that no acid can escape.
•
Only transport filled batteries vertically and protect them from tipping over so that no acid can escape.
•
Check the battery charge regularly. Recharge if necessary (see point 4).
3.3 Maintenance
•
Keep the battery clean and dry.
•
Only clean the terminals and surface of the battery with a damp anti-static cloth. Otherwise there is a risk of explosion.
•
Tighten the terminal clamps properly.
•
Check the acid level regularly. If necessary, top up the battery cells with demineralized water. (If the water consumption is excessive, check the alternator or generator).
•
If the starting current is too low, charge the battery (see point 4).
•
If the battery is not used for a longer period of time (e.g. in winter), it is essential to maintain the charge with a charge retention device. Carefully remove the battery before charging.
•
Only use suitable chargers and observe the operating instructions for the charger.
•
Do not charge frozen batteries or batteries with a temperature above 45 °C.
•
Connect the positive terminal (+) of the battery to the positive terminal of the charger and the negative terminal (-) of the battery to the negative terminal of the charger.
•
Only switch on/plug in the charger after connecting the battery.
•
When charging is complete, first switch off the charger and then disconnect the connections.
•
Interrupt the charging process immediately if the battery becomes hot or leaks acid.
•
Remove the battery from the vehicle (see section 3.1).
•
Remove the caps from the battery cells and ensure that the workplace is adequately ventilated.
•
Ensure good ventilation when charging in closed rooms.
•
Once charging is complete, allow the battery to rest for about two hours. Then check the acid level. If necessary, top up the battery cells with demineralized water. Carefully close the battery cells with the caps. Wipe off any acid splashes immediately with a moistened antistatic cloth.
| A. Exposing the vent opening Remove the vent plug on the side of the battery before filling. |
|
| B. Preparing the battery Remove all plugs on the top of the battery by twisting or pulling. |
|
| C. Opening the acid bottle Open the acid bottle by cutting off the valve. Please note: do not remove the valve of the acid bottle too close to the bottle, otherwise the filling hose cannot be placed on it. We recommend leaving at least 10 mm. |
|
| D. Inserting the filling hose Place the supplied filling hose securely on the valve of the acid bottle. |
|
| E. Filling the battery with acid Slowly fill the battery with acid. Ensure that all chambers are filled individually and evenly up to the »max« mark. The amount of acid provided in the acid bottle is exactly the amount required. |
|
| F. Recycling the acid bottle The completely empty acid bottle is recyclable. Please check your local recycling service and dispose accordingly. |
|
| G. Sealing the battery with the plugs After filling, completely seal the battery with the plugs removed in step 2. The vent plug on the side should however NOT be re-inserted. |
